Trewallar Grubber

Last century horses were used to power machinery such as this which has
now been converted to be driven by a tractor Power Take Off.

Trewallar is an area between Ballarat and Beaufort on the Western Highway.
It was there that the Trewallar Jack was invented.

Originally the horse would have pulled a wire rope on a pulley on the top of the unit.
Once at the extreme end of the rope, the horse would be unharnessed, brought back to the machine
and after setting the pulley for the opposite direction, would pull from the short end of the rope again.
This would continue until sufficient pressure had been applied to the stump or tree to remove it.

This unit was last used by Harold Collins, one of our volunteers, on his farm around 50 years ago.
